Gluten is a major source of inflammation which fuels a vast number of chronic illnesses from Parkinson's to Crohn's to Schizophrenia. So many of my clients come to me with chronic issues ranging from digestive issues, to anxiety/depression, psoriasis, chronic fatigue, joint-pain, fibromyalgia, etc. and many say they have tried a "gluten-free" diet and didn't see any results. Thus, they conclude they aren't gluten sensitive, and then spin their wheels trying to understand why they can't heal. (I was one of them!)
I want to shed light on some common mistakes that are made when attempting a Gluten-Free diet, and why you may be missing out on the massive healing benefits.
1. Gluten-Free Processed Foods
Just because a product says "Gluten-Free" on the label DOES NOT mean it is healthy or going to not cause a reaction in your body. Processed Gluten free foods like gluten-free cakes or brownies are loaded with hard to digest grains (that your body is probably also reacting too), rancid oils, highly refined carbs and TONS OF SUGAR to make them taste good. I made this mistake 6 years ago. I started to develop an autoimmune thyroid condition, gained weight, was chronically fatigued, horrible brain fog, digestive issues, shortness of breath etc. I found out I was intolerant to gluten, soy, eggs, and milk. I went off all of these for 3 months and had no relief in any of my symptoms because I was eating tons of these Allergy-Free processed foods. I finally committed to a true elimination protocol, and learned which foods work for my body. In less than 30 days, ALL of my symptoms went away.
Just because something is Gluten-Free doesn't mean you aren't reacting to it. Being gluten sensitive means your body is eliciting an immune response to the gluten protein. Thinking it's a foreign invader, it sees the gluten and sends out an army of antibodies. This reaction causes inflammation in the body which is what fuels chronic conditions. When your immune system is on high alert because stressed out, it can often start reacting to other things, thinking it's gluten. Casein protein in dairy, corn, and other grains are commonly reacted too. Meaning if you eat them you're still eliciting that immune response and pouring gasoline on the fire.
3. "Everything in Moderation" DOES NOT WORK HERE
When it comes to Gluten sensitivity, you can't just be 99% gluten-free. Even a tiny bit of gluten, could be a sip of beer, or a bite of a dinner roll, less than 1/8th of a finger nail can elicit a huge immune response. Your body is geared up to attack, and on a microscopic level the smallest amount of gluten can trigger an immune response and inflammation which can last for weeks, even months at a time. This is the most common reason people don't see the true healing when it comes to elimination. Many people who suffer from autoimmune related disorders, continue to react to gluten, and their body's start attacking their own tissues. For example Hashimoto's, the antibodies for gluten start attacking the thyroid tissue. So until all gluten is removed entirely and the immune system calms down, the attack on the thyroid prevails.
So, who should be concerned about gluten?
According to Dr. Thomas O’Bryan, who is an expert on Wheat and autoimmunity, "Anyone who is sick. If you have a headache, you’re sick. If you have joint pain, you’re sick. If you are depressed, you’re sick. If you have irritable bowel, you’re sick. If you have poor memory, you’re sick,” You get the point. If you don’t feel well, then gluten may be the culprit." No one digests gluten protein properly and the degree of inflammation or tolerance of the immune reaction varies from person to person.
